IoT – Internet of Things
The interesting world of Internet of Things.
So what exactly is IoT? According to Wikipedia it “describes physical objects (or groups of such objects) that are embedded with sensors, processing ability, software, and other technologies that connect and exchange data with other devices and systems over the Internet or other communications networks”. Well, that’s rather long and complicated definition but it sums it up quite nicely. Basically it means that a lot of devices that were previously “dumb” are now becoming “smart” and communication with each other.
Obviously, this goes much further then just a smart home. IoT is being implemented in manufacturing, healthcare, traffic regulation, building automation, transportation and so on. But it also has a huge effect on products used in your home. You could even say that without IoT, a term called smart home wouldn’t exist, at least not in the form as it is today.
You are running out of milk in the fridge – your fridge senses that and orders a new one with a delivery service. A toilet that measures your weight, blood pressure and many other vitals every time you sit on the “throne”. A security camera that knows you by your face and tells the smart lock on the front door to open when you arrive. These are just a few examples in the myriad of IoT smart home world.
And communicating with each other is just one part of the picture. Second, maybe even more important piece of the pie, is data. Unimaginable amounts of data. Almost all devices in the IoT network gather information about it’s usage and the environment around it. That data is then forwarded and analyzed to make things even more smarter and efficient!
All of this is possible due to vast array of sensors embedded in the devices and microchips that do all the hard work processing the data.
We would say that at the moment we are still in the beginning phase of smart things. But as the technology advances, sensors get smaller, smarter and more affordable, we really begin to see the benefits of these kind of communications. So it’s good to keep an eye on the advances of IoT and what changes it brings to smart home world since you never know when something new and clever is being developed, something that might just be really useful for you.
Here’s a quick video overview about Internet of Things, go and have a look!
All the best!
